Lucie Idlout - Lovely Irene (Angel Street)

This is the song that our group showed in the last presentation about Native American communities in Canada and the participation of Inuit people in the White People world. Lovely Irene is a song written by Lucie Idlout about her friend who was a victim of domestic violence, and this song was used in a campaign against domestic violence: The Angel Street Project. After the campaign, eight cities in Canada were renamed "Angel Street". The lyrics are listed below.

Lovely Irene
Broken down on angel street
He pushed you down
Made you unseen
Irene
High heels on a gravel road
He never loved you
That’s all he knows
Could never please him
So the story goes
Irene
High heels on a gravel road
My Lovely Irene
I love you Irene
You ain’t crazy
How could you have known
He’d kill a lifetime
And break all your bones
Irene
High heels on a gravel road
My lovely Irene
I love you Irene
Why didn’t you walk away
You should have just walked away

  1. Just heard this song for the first time today and I have to say the lyrics in contrast to the musicality of the song are heart-rending. Congratulations
