Basically the film revolves around the following idea: What happens when a woman
does not comply with what is socially
expected of her as a woman?
There is a deep conflict between Jesminder and her family, because she is not fulfilling the role that is assigned as a Hindu woman. Cook, married, have a family, being a homeowner is the plan that her culture "promises", but clearly Jesminder has other interests and motivations that go beyond and away from the family that loves them. She is motivated and passionate about football, an activity that is in our culture is for men and women, but in her culture is something impossible to do, just for being a woman.
Throughout the film there are many examples of this " disembedding " of gender roles, for example when Jesminder’s mother tells her that she has played enough, “ you should start behaving like a woman” or when Jules’s mother , despite reproach her not much sd Jesminder’s mother does , insists on removing her from the world of football and lead the world of traditional femininity.
I think it's an interesting film, perhaps with a slightly predictable end, but that mixes several themes: stereotyping, prejudice, homosexuality, struggle to achieve a dream, traditions and mainly as two very different cultures face to each other.
In my opinion the director of this film tries to portray us as public the contrast of two cultures, two worlds so opposite and ask the question, Why not try to mix two cultures and why we have to be so rigid with our vision world?

I think that we are living in a conservative world, so the vision of the people is always to strict, but we can change that, because we are young and we as a students, live every day experiences that make change our minds, we live with people with different customs, religion, race, etc. We can change the world

DeleteI agree with you Valentina if we want we can change the world ,only depends of us, but we have to know that its not easy.
DeleteAlso something importante that we can learn with the movie is that we have to learn to be tolerants with other cultures and not judge about the appearances, we dont have to form ideas without knowing the person.
Most of the time when I saw the movie I thought: it is ridiculous that Jesminder can not play football, or the mother forced her to learn to cook , but I forget that we are talking about different cultures. There are so many different visions, and as you mentioned Carolina, tolerance is essential.
ReplyDeleteI really like this movie and I had watched it many times before. But this is the first time that I watch it in English and it's the first time that I think about stereotyping and prejudice in it after watch it. Mainly, it's obvious the stereotype of the Hindu woman who shouldn't play football and should have a femenine behavior. However, we can see other stereotypes, like lifestyle of Hindu people in England and the money that they have or stereotypes about homosexuality, like the supposition of that a woman shouldn't use her hair short and if she so, she's lesbian or the simply fact that a man can't be gay because he's Hindu. After all, I think it's a good movie, easyly enjoyable and one of those that we can watch over again and recomend to other people.
ReplyDeleteI think the situation currently facing the world in which we live, where cultural exchange is becoming stronger, it is important to be able to accept the different realities that we face, and to be constantly living with different cultures, traditions. is part of everyday life and in society as well as the exchange of experiences will make us grow as people and why not see the world from another perspective.
