In Thunderheart we saw thatRay Levoiis embarrassedthatin his veinsrunsIndian blood.Such casesoftenoccurin our country withpeople who havekinshipor inheritanceMapuche. Whyis this happen? Why are weashamed ofourroots andorigin?
Well, I don't think that there are many cases of those, but regarding the question that you wrote I think some people may be ashamed of their roots because the world that we live now is like "too civilizated" for accept them. Obviously, I don't agree with that, I think we would not be the same without the Aborigines, they were and are today, a big part of our history and we have to respect them.
I don't think that we are ashamed of our origin, I think that people just don't give importance to their roots, and it could be for many reasons. I think one of them could be that to this country is not important for the Ministry of Education to include in it's programme plenty of time to learn about latin american culture, which means less time to know more about our aborigens. So, how can we be proud of our heritage if we don't know more about them?
I think that the whole story is caused by terms of culture knowledge. Recently, I've talked to a neighbour about how Chilean citizens see the Mapuches. She told me that they only make disasters to be recognized. That kind of thought makes me wonder that most of the people dont know anything of their own past, their own culture. I know that our world is based now in a modern way in where schools teach to students to be professional persons, but if you started to think how much do they know about native problems here and now, your answer could be that the know few things. We have to do a little effort to understand native problems deeply, not to stereotype them with preconceptions that could be in many cases inaccurate or wrong.
