Five Key Questions (By Julio Díaz)

1) Who created this message?

This song was written by Jonathan Michael McLaughlin and Jamie Houston in 2007. The video is property of The Island Def Jam Music Group.

2) What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?

Multiple techniques are used. The song has a powerful melody (I love the sound of that piano) and I think its lyrical is deep. The video is focusing on the singer Jon McLaughlin and his physical appearence (mostly his face and eyes). But the most important part of the video is the girls that appear on it, all different, just to make remarkable that all of them are beautiful.

3) How might different people understand this message differently?

I guess people may understand this message differently if they have or not self-esteem issues. I think it's obvious that the message is sending to those girls that don't appreciate themselves, but it is also sent to their parents, their friends and all people around them. However, in a quick read, most people may think that this song is about a girl that feeling all alone, rejected by her parents or her boyfriend. I prefer to believe that the meaning is the first I thought.

4) What values, lifestyles and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?

In my opinion, the most important value in this message is the self respect. No one has to change for what other people think. No matter how lost and confused you are, you don't have to feel that way.

5) Why is this message being sent?

I definitely think that this message was sent because most of girls feel insecure for who they are. All girls are pretty, but they don't know it or don't believe it. And these girls constantly feel depressed or sad because of articles and photos in magazines, or by comments from friends or relatives. They feel like a disaster, but they have to know that they are beautiful just the way they are.
